Lucy the Elephant in Margate City, New Jersey, was built in 1881 by land speculator James V. Lafferty, Jr. Lucy is an architectural folly that was intended to attract potential home buyers to the area. Lucy was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The restoration project completed in December 2022 included the total replacement of Lucy’s deteriorated exterior metal skin with Monel (Nickel 400). The scope of work also included repairs or replacement of decayed wood sheathing and framing, and repainting. Kreilick served as the metals conservator for the project.
